Puyehue Volcano Erupts in Chile

As a photographer, I am envious of those that had the opportunity to capture this natural event and I pray they were able to do this without putting their lives in danger. As always, when pursuing a great journalistic image, sometimes you encounter risks.  Photographers, regardless of their area of expertise, are always searching for the opportunity to capture that perfect image. Some of us create those opportunities with people or objects, while others wait for them to happen naturally, as is the case with the Puyehue Volcano.

Personally, as a Christian, these images are a testament to God’s power! Sure, you can scientifically explain the reaction that happened, even down to a sub atomic level, but why? We should just accept some situations, some occurrences for what they are—Simply awesome!

These photos remind me of John Martin’s painting “The Great Day of His Wrath” depicting the Rapture from Revelations Chapter 16

On Saturday, a volcano in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain of south-central Chile erupted after lying dormant for more than 50 years. The government evacuated several thousand residents as Puyehue threw ash more than 6 miles (10 km) into the sky, pushing the plume toward neighboring Argentina. Authorities had already put the area around the volcano on alert after a flurry of earthquakes earlier on Saturday -- at one point, the tremors reached an average of 230 per hour. Collected here are a handful of spectacular photographs of the eruption this weekend and its effects in Chile and Argentina. Chile's Puyehue Volcano Erupts
